A Personal Journey with a Purpose

Alisa Johnson, a former Marine Corps C-130 pilot, alongside her Navy husband, faced the poignant reality of navigating military life with their beloved pet, JD, an Australian Shepherd. It was during their own cross-country moves and deployments that the need for a support system became glaringly clear. The couple's personal struggle to find care for JD during deployments sparked the inception of Dogs on Deployment—a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that no military family has to make the painful choice between service and their pets.

Military life often entails frequent relocations and extended periods of separation, presenting significant logistical challenges for service members with pets. These beloved companions provide comfort and stability amidst the uncertainties of service commitments. Through fostering and financial assistance programs, Dogs on Deployment mitigates these issues by connecting military families with volunteer caregivers who can provide temporary homes for pets, ensuring both peace of mind for deployed personnel and loving care for their furry family members.

There is a profound bond between military families and their pets. These animals serve as constant companions, bridging the emotional gaps during absences and providing unwavering support through the demands of military life. Alisa recounts her late dog JD’s story, a poignant reminder of the joy and struggle intertwined with the responsibility of pet ownership within the military.

Creating a Nationwide Impact

Initially started as a small, local initiative, Dogs on Deployment has grown into a nationwide network. Fueled by media attention and community support, the organization now offers a spectrum of services. These include financial assistance for boarding during deployments, aid with veterinary care, and, notably, support for PCS (Permanent Change of Station) moves which can incur prohibitive costs for transporting pets.

Dogs on Deployment thrives through community involvement and awareness. Military families can spread the word by introducing the organization during pre-deployment meetings or at various community hubs. Additionally, participation in initiatives like Wreaths Across America allows for collective fundraising efforts. For those with the capacity to help, registering as a boarder on the organization’s website creates a direct impact, providing temporary homes for military pets.

Get Involved

Dogs on Deployment invites those within the military community and beyond to support their mission by sharing their message and participating in outreach efforts. Whether through volunteering, spreading awareness, or donating, every contribution aids in their goal of supporting service members and their families.

Dogs on Deployment stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives that respond to real, tangible needs among military families. By fostering a supportive network, they ensure military members no longer face the daunting decision of choosing between service and family. Through their tireless work, Alyssa Johnson and team continue to create a space where military families can find the stability and security their pets deserve.
